Newsgroups and filters
Since we have some servers defined, lets get all available newsgroups from the servers.
- Click the 'Newsgroup list' tab (card file icon), right click 'Newsgroup list' at the top, and select 'Open & get All newsgroups'
- When the download finishes, you will have 1000's of newsgroups listed in the 'Interaction window'
That's it for updating the newsgroup list.
Before we subscribe to some groups, lets cover some NewsPro interface stuff
Searching (CTRL+F)
Use the binocular icon to bring up the Find dialog. This one is pretty self explanatory.
Message filter (CTRL+S)
This is one of the coolest things in NewsPro. Lets take a look at this window and go over it
- Condition - First combo box is the type of filter, second lists options relevant to the first selection. The third is used to enter your criteria (line #s, subject, etc)
- Selection scope - How to apply this filter. All is all articles listed, selected is only selected headers, unselected is all headers not currently selected
- Open, Add, Save - Opens, adds an existing filter, or saves this filter for future use
- Negation - Does the opposite of the condition currently entered
- Boolean wildmat - The third entry in the Condition box should be treated as a wildmat expression
- Whole word - Match whole word when searching vs the word inside another word (i.e. if looking for 'them', don't match 'themselves')
- Case-sensitive - match string exactly as entered
- Select - Clicking this will select all posts that meet your criteria. Click Reset to reverse this
- Extract - Clicking this will hide all posts EXCEPT for the posts that meet your criteria. Click Reset to reverse this
- Ban - Clicking this will hide all posts that meet your criteria. Click Reset to reverse this
- Delete selected Hdr/Ngs/bodies - Deletes the selected items
- Undo - Reverses last action
- Clear - Clears filter settings
- Reset - Restores listing to its pre-filter state
- Close - Close the search dialog box
Here are some useful filters (all in one zip file):
- Articles with attachments only
- New articles only
- New articles with attachments only
Click the link and save the file to your NewsPro directory in a directory called 'Filters'
Global message filter
This is the same as a message filter, except it is applied to all newsgroups, not just the current one.
Task manager and error report (CTRL+T)
Click the bar chart icon to bring up the task manager window
This is where you can see the progress of various tasks NewsPro is doing. For now we will cover the 'Headers' tab.
'Running' shows all currently running tasks and their progress. Red denotes a task that is selected. Cancel the task by clicking 'Cancel task'.
Pending will list any tasks that are in the queue due to the max # of tasks being reached (set under Properties...Tasks)
The bottom bar closes the task manager as well as shows information like current bandwidth usage and estimated time to complete all tasks
Now that you know how to filter things and use the task manager, we can get a better listing of the newsgroups we want to subscribe to.
Take a few minutes to play with the filtering to find some groups you want to subscribe to.
Now that you have a short list of groups, do one of the following to subscribe:
- Double click the newsgroup
- Press ALT+D
After you have subscribed to a few groups, its time to use em! Close the Newsgroup list if you haven't already.
